Farmer Aidan

Well, this is Aidan's 5th grade Great American program that is about a month old since it's right before school got out, but I wanted to put the script on so you would know what is being said and I finally remembered where I put it. Each class had students that did a skit and they all sang songs in between. For some reason I cut the video before the last two comments, but the whole script is here.

Aidan thought it would be a good idea to talk with a "farmer's" accent.

Farmer: Well, Sally, it looks like the bald eagle has been officially adopted as our national emblem.
Sally: Officially adopted? In spite of old Ben Franklin fightin' against it?
Child: Why doesn't Mr. Franklin want the eagle to represent America, Mama?
Sally: Mr. Franklin claims that the eagle is a bird of bad moral character. He says it's too lazy to fish for itself, and that it's a coward because the little birds chase it away.
Child: Well then, which bird does Mr. Franklin want for the American emblem?
Sally: The turkey.
Farmer: The TURKEY! Now, that just proves old Ben don't know everything! It's my opinion that he misunderstands the eagle!
Child: What do you mean, Papa?
Farmer: The eagle is no bully it's just that he's bigger'n every bird around! When those little birds come at him, he just takes the same attitude that old Molly does when her puppies jump on her and bite her ears-
Child: Molly just ignores her pups when they act like that. Is the eagle ignoring those pesky little birds, Papa?
Farmer: You better believe it!
Sally: You know, there's some nice symbolism in that! This United States is becoming a strong nation, and I don't think it would be right for us to strut around with our feathers out like a conceited old turkey. I like the quiet strength that the eagle show. Mark my words, someday people will thank the congress that they didn't listen to Mr. Ben Franklin for once!

How cute!! I'm certainly glad that the eagle won out! Sheesh, if it had been the other way around, what would we be eating on Thanksgiving??
